Jog, here is some info to keep in mind. An old timer from california told me about streams that have a sharp 90 degree turn or sharper can deposit the gold right up against the bank of the first turn (outside part of turn). I told him about a stream I was working and he brought this up. I went back to this spot and he was right. Gold was pushed right up against the bank. In heavy floods it can do exactly that. If you don't have luck with the straight channel that is high and dry, try the spot I just mentioned. Gold likes a straight path or a path of little resistance.

I believe your right and few others have said the same. I have watched a lot of rivers at flood stage and they will definitely take the path of least resistance, and if there is resistance they usually will find a way around or through.
