My first M/D find
Detector(s) used
Garrett Ace 250
Went out to one of my favorite spots yesterday, found about 15 broken points and one knife/scraper that is pretty sweet.
Also found what looks to be an Indian dinner plate or cutting board lol, is there a name for this type of artifact? Plenty of knife/cutting marks on top of it in all directions, and it's 7 1/2 inches at its widest.

Thanks for any help!

If it has cut marks on it in all directions, it not disc marks. I have found axes that have disc marks in them and its a no brainer mark. I have found many chunks of hematite with cut marks in them. I would like to take a look at some of the broken ones...Just kinda wondering what associated with them..... John

If you also find evidence of grinding corn (mortars, hominy holes, pestles, mano stones, metates, etc.) it very well could be a stone "griddle" for cooking flat corn cakes/bread. (It could also just be a flat field rock.)

They are pretty common finds in KY & TN, but a lot of people don't recognize them since most are just naturally flat rocks with very little work. Usually they'll be blackened from sitting in a fire. Even when you recognize them they aren't really collectable for most people.

These were found about 20 yards away. Thanks for the replies.

That.. if an artifact could be a lap stone used as a knapping platform.

I would have guessed my odds of seeing one of these posted at a million to one. I can't say for sure what these were used for, but I have always found them along side of spades. The small piece you have, I think is a small spade. Are these similar to what you have? I tried to hold my flat round piece just as you had yours for the pic.

Mine only has one spot on its outer edge that appears to be worn from work.

Every thing that I have here came from the same site. Notice every piece is worn flat on one side, even the round thing. Good eye. As mentioned above, most would never look at it twice. I also agree with the above remark about these pieces not being sought after of collected. I really never have considered the title "collector" to fit my description.

Nice post scotto. That is a nice knife and the round rock I really cant say cause I havent found one before. But it looks like a small Metate or as you said a plate.

I'm just guessing here but if that flat piece was a knapping platform the cut marks could be from grinding point bases.

Might be a top for a pot.

Been flintknapping for a couple of years and never heard of a knapping platform.
