Art's Palace Token

Just thought I'd share one of my finds from '07.
Don't know much about it,except it's referred to
as 'maverick'.
Thanks for looking, and if you know Art,ask him
where his palace is for me! :D

Re: Art's Palace Token

Not only is this referred to as a maverick (i.e. not having a town and state), it is also called a Brunswick or BBC token. Art, when he set up his billiard hall, bought a pool table and/or bar fixtures from the Brunswick-Balke-Collender Company of Chicago, one of the leading manufacturers of such stuff (and still well-known in bowling alleys and pool halls today as the Brunswick Corporation). As part of the deal with the Brunswick company, he was able to order tokens for use in the Palace at a good price. The tokens would carry Brunswick's ad on one side and his info on the other. This Brunswick reverse is one of many used since Brunswick probably contracted the manufacturing of tokens to various other companies. The B-B-C co. was formed in 1884 and these tokens were popular into the 1920s. This particular one is not listed in the 1977 "The Brunswick Token Story" by Fowler, Magnuson, & White as published in the Journal of the Token and Medal Society (TAMS).

Re: Art's Palace Token

Thanks for the history lesson,John! That's a lot more than I've ever heard.
I wish I could find out exactly where Art had his palace.
1920's you say? That's great.I'd rather find this kind of history than coins anyday!
