A stone-walled garage (I think) stands in a park near Lenexa, KS. Nothing but an empty shell now, with a sunken, collapsed asphalt driveway and a rubbish-covered concrete floor. I detected around it this morning, and mostly found rusty nails and scrap metal. But about 30 feet away, I also found a small brass or copper tag, buried about 3 inches deep, bearing the hand-punched name

W. E. SAVAGE
R.R.2.K.C.K.

It looks old. I'm trying to figure out who the person was. There are a lot of W.E. Savages out there.

Growing up I lived on a R.R. = Rural Route. Looks like an address.

2 Kansas City, Kansas

Maybe next to the Governors Mansion.

Just a long shot guess.

I was born in Kansas City, KS and grew up there. I'm working on researching this.

For sure name and address.

W. E. Savage
Rural Route 2
Kansas City, Kansas

Could come from a collar for a hunting dog. Dog gets lost and owners name is on it.

The larger piece center at the top is a cycle mower blade. The farmers used this type of mower to cut hay with.

I discovered that R.R. 2 is in zip code 66102, and I found a 1920 map of KCK that shows what is probably R.R. 2 around that area. It was rural then.

Your hunting dog theory makes sense.

I found an obituary for W.E. Savage in Bonita, KS (south of Olathe), who died in 1967 at 83, but nothing for W.E. Savage in KCK. Anyway, it's a tangible hunk of obscure local history.

I think of all those times I went to that park as a drunk teenager in 1977, and that tag must have been lying there buried, waiting patiently for me.
