I spent most of the day doubling the size of the hole to this Roman rubbish pit. It turned out to be the biggest hole I have dug, & bottomed out on gravel at about 5.5ft from the surface.
Although I only got 1 good pot today, it was still a blast.
As well as the usual bones I got a few Cow horns as well!
No metal found other than the nails & lead.:sadsmiley:

No brainer thats a banner

How did you pinpoint the pit?

Pure luck. It was our 3rd random hole. Its a 1 in 100 chance in this area. Good area in the centre of a Roman Town.

That pot is really nice. I would rather dig a trash pit than anything else. Great post and find.

That is a fantastic pot. Do you have many complete examples in your collection?

Cheers,

Buck

Never found a complete one, so these are the closest.

That looks very familiar Cru. Here's a shot of my old partner Chuck taking his turn in an early pit we dug a few years ago that contained many artifacts including a near complete 1580-1640 delftware plate. Definitely looks like a gravedigger. And BTW - awesome find with that little pot!
