Attended a workshop for "renourishing" (sic) a 4 mile stretch of beach from the Martin/St. Lucie county line south. The corps of engineers had done their homework, unlike the St. Lucie county presentation a few months ago. Impressions:
1) It's now called a "hurricane and shoreline protection" project.
2) The selected material, to be dredged from the ocean, matches previous renourishment materials
3) However, it in no way resembles true beach material.
4) Part of the "spin" from the coastal engineer is that renourishment is good for tourism
5) I pointed out the beaches are downright nasty, and I'm ashamed to take anyone to the beach
6) Everyone points to the DEP or some other agency as deciding what's "beach quality" dirt
7) The corps admits the material is not ideal, but what other choice do they have?
8) Doing nothing is not an option (screw the beach, gotta protect the condos)
9) Some consultant did an intensive environmental impact study, including archaeology
10) Baloney. They didn't even show the leased areas on their presentation.
11) Lotsa emphasis on turtles, to draw the attention of the naive away from the real problem
12) The corp did a good job, but we, the public who really understands our beaches, are getting SCREWED AGAIN!

Bill,

Dont fight it.let them pump the sand on the beaches once again to get washed away.Maybe one day they will learn that you cant fight mother nature and all that money is a waste.

Shoulda seen the inland garbage they dumped on North Melbourne beach a couple a years ago.

Down right nasty, I wouldn't let a child play in it.

The best about that tho was it got washed out 2 months later! :laughing7: :laughing7:

The Gubberment learn something, not gonna happen as their heads are shoved too far into the sand!! :laughing7: :laughing7:

~~Happy Hunting & Merry Christmas~~
