So met up with Carolina Tom and Smittyman at lunch time.
They caught a flight early this morning and landed in Philadelphia at 10am. I text them a address were to go. By 11am they were swinging. Lol.
I caught up with them by 12pm..
Great guys!!! ( for southern boys) lol.
Not 10min into hunt I get this awsome mid tone deep..
Thats when i pulled the watch out.
Man this this is beautifully if i say so myself. .lol.
Tom almost crapped himself. .
Then we all together hunting this area, and I get a nice deep high tone.
I get Tom to check it with his detector, then I get Smittyman to check it.
Anyway i dig down around 10inchs and the half cent comes out!!!!
I hand it to Smittyman and say what is it?? They dont know, they have never seen one before! !! Lol.
I get it back a wipe it and say OMG!!!
Its a freaking 1803 half cent..
Did not expect that at this place???
Well right after that i pack my detector up and say im out of here.
You boys go find the rest..
There still there..
Hope they find the same??
But im sure glad I got my!!! Lol.
Ps. This is a new spot, I found it just for them;-)
Thanks for looking, and I look forward to seeing what they find. Were meeting up for dinner later.
George

George,

Congrats on two super nice finds! I would not try much in trying to open the rear access cover on the pocket watch as you could damage it beyond repair. The pocket watch appears that at least the case is reuseable but if it has been in the ground for some time, then the movement, face (dial) and hands are probably toast. If you take it to a Watch Repair Shop, just make sure you are witness to the opening to see what is stamped on the inside of the rear access cover as this is where it will be stamped with 14k or 14k Gold Filled or other. I am not saying that a Watch Repairman would switch your's for a lesser Gold filled pocket watch but I just don't trust some of the folks as well as Jewelers and I document everything with pics and notations.

Once you get the 1803 Half Cent cleaned up, then maybe the Variety can be determined. Cohen 1 and 3 are very common, Cohen 2 is very scarce and Cohen 4 is scarce.

With the Pocket Watch find, it just goes to show every one on Treasure Net, that even your time is golden!

Frank

Thanks Frank..
The back is pretty smooth.
Not going to be able to tell..
I thought there was only 2 versions.
Cohen 1 and cohen 2..
I already have the rare one..lol.

George - thanks for the call and sharing in your excitement with me. Looks like your golden horseshoe came through again .... literally. Based on some of the discussion here I'm not sure about the ID or value of your watch, but it's an ultra cool find regardless. And I really like that copper too. Looks like she's in decent shape and should clean up nicely. Hope those southern boys don't clean out your spot. You'd better go check on them ....

Man that watch sure held up well to the forces of nature! Must have been practically waterproof. No staining on the face, hand still intact, simply amazing. The half cent is in great condition too. Very nice of you to put those guys on some good Pennsylvania ground George. I hope they do alright.

No, there are actually 4 Cohen Varieties!(**) If you have the rarer one (Cohen 2), then you should be able to tell if your' new find is or is not that Variety. If it isn't a Cohen 2, then you will have to narrow it down to whether it is a Cohen 1, 3 or 4. Let's hope that is is a Cohen 2 or Cohen 4!

(**)1803 Half Cent

Also, I do not know if all of the cases for the Sovereign Pocket Watches were Gold Filled. Surely, there were some that were solid Gold whether 10k, 12k, 14k or 18k and the case on your' found pocket watch sure looks awfully good if it is in fact Gold Filled after a light soap and water cleaning! Most of the Gold Filled pocket watch cases that I encounter and which have not been polished in a long time, are darkened to a brownish Gold and none came out of the ground as your's did.

Unfortunately Vino I don't think they ever minted a half whit. But I bet if you tried with all that you are digging you probably could find 1 or 2.
