I'm not blaming anybody, i'm just saying. As far as the internet goes, it may have "enhanced" the capabilities of a bully, and it is a big part of the problem but it's not the only problem. Maybe kids shouldn't be allowed to "play" on the internet, period, especially facebook and twitter. Maybe parents should pay more attention to what their kids are doing in their daily lives. Maybe parents should teach better values and instill self confidence in their children, instead of letting the computer raise them. Kids today are desensitized to many things because of the internet. Images of sex, drugs, nudity, violence, blood, guts, gore, death, everything is available to their impressionable eyes at the touch of a button. The blame lies within each and every parent to some degree or another, imho.

Agreed. Parents need to be parents. Thank you for saying this.

Folks,

Just my take on it for whatever it's worth....I can only control my own actions/behavior not that of others.

If someone plays the bully whether online or in person.....I have 2 choices ignore it or push back.....if the situation warrants it I'll push back.....otherwise I walk away or ignore it and they come across as the loser.

Food for thought.

I think when it comes to children and adolescents, it's a whole different thing. They don't have the developmental skills to be able to deal with and be objective. ..

JerseyBen,

I will follow you to hell and back. "Define irony: a bunch of idiots dancing around on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash." -Steve Buscemi

However, I am starting to get the feeling that if I stand with you then I might just be against you. DJ's...song request, "Bully" by Shine down.

Barb,

As much as I respect your take on things.....my view might be a bit different....when I started school at 6 years of age I got escorted on day 1 just so I knew the way there....after that I was on my own or made my way from and to school either alone or with schoolmates.....

I kind of learned to be resilient and defend myself if need be....no molly coddling.....

I happen to have a neighbor who's a very nice lady who escorts her daughter from and to school morning, lunch and after school every day.....we're not talking 6 years of age anymore....she's in grade 6 so we're talking 12 years of age....it boggles the mind....she's certainly not doing her daughter any favors....and is stifling her development.

When I mentioned this to my wife and a few other people they pointed out that maybe mom was abused as a child and that's why she's being over protective....if that's the case she needs counseling....and needs to let her daughter spread her wings so to speak....I'll get off my soapbox now.

Bullying is nothing new, it was going on when I was in elementary school 45 years ago. We learned to deal with it then, what is different now....

Each child is different. .for instance if a child has just lost a parent thru death if divorce, they are much more vulnerable!

My parents were divorced when I was in 2nd grade. I learned to deal with bullying.... kids learned to handle their problems by humor, making bigger friends or just by standing up to their bully.

We had guns, we hunted, cartoons were violent and yet no one was going to school shooting classmates...

good thread,a few months ago my son who is sixteen now told me something that happened to him when he was 8yrs old ,a boy who was in high school at the time ,punched him in the stomach while on the bus, he came home and never said a word,i was blown away at first ,wondering why didnt he say something, why didnt i see a (sign),my first thoughts were he is an adult now the other boy,i should pay him a visit, but a little more thought on it ,i started feeling a little pride in that he sufferd it on his own, dealt with it on his own,he now laughs as he was telling me ,that it was the hardest hes ever been punched.so after consider guilt questioning my parenting skills, then a little pride,i learned a lesson that day as well, that life is rough and i cant possibly be there every moment of their lives though i would like to be,but the best i can do is try to instill confidence ,let them know that there are people like this in the world, and that as long as you know that these people are socially deficient for one reason or another, they are not to be feared, my dad (old school) always told me that bumps and bruises will always heal, but your pride never will, win lose or draw, deal with it now before it gets worse, chances are they want to bully not fight, and once you do they will not likely mess with you again knowing you wont take it, that is where confidence comes into play that you will get up even if you lost knowing (they might be bigger but they know ill fight) but with todays facebook and the like ,when many can attack you at once,i tend to think why give a crap ,but as a child this is their whole world and not so easy to overcome, perhaps this is how coping skills are developed, cope or be a victim, i guess bullying is stressful for parents as well, no answers here though. sorry for being long winded on the subject. loco

When I was in the 9th grade I witnessed a sickening event in the locker room. A bully was always making fun of somebody who was mentally handicapped and didn't have the intelligence to let it go or defend himself verbally. One day the bully got real brave and picked a fight with him after gym class. Problem was, this handicapped kid could fight and starting whooping on him. Within seconds the bully's friends jumped on the poor kid and got him on the ground. From there on out they just took turns beating on him while he was on the ground. Nobody said a word...nobody got in trouble.

I weighed 120lbs at the time. I regret not having the courage to intervene; however, at that stage of my life I would have been a wisp of air and target for their rage. I was bullied constantly my whole childhood. I was persecuted for a religion that was not mine. You people can clamor on all you want about standing up to bullies and not needing to do anything about it. Standing up to one bully is easy. Try fighting ten off at one time. Maybe I should have brought a gun to school....

And Bill, a six year old girl walking herself to school is bait for sexual predators. Same thing for the 12y.o. There are sick sexual predators that live right next to you and you don't even know it. Spend a day with me, hear the stories, know the truth...

Yes! Yes, Crisp I totally agree! I should have added that I would not want any kid walking to school alone and unattended, but that a supervised group is needed!
I hate that you or anyone was treated badly! :(

This one made national news. Happened in the same 50 mile radius as Trayvon Martin. Maybe this girl should have just toughened up....or brought a gun to school. Define irony....

Bullied Girl Commits Suicide in Florida
By: Susan Harris
September 16, 2013
Tweet40Bullied Girl Commits Suicide

After being bullied online by more than a dozen former friends, a 12-year-old Florida girl commits suicide, a sheriff said Thursday. Authorities are also trying to decide if they will file charges under the state’s new cyber-bullying law.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that Rebecca Ann Sedwick jumped to her death on Monday at an old cement business in Lakeland, a city between Tampa and Orlando. Investigators say the girl was despondent after others had posted hate messages about her online.

Sedwick was “absolutely terrorized on social media,” Judd said.

The Lakeland Ledger reports that detectives found multiple social media applications where Sedwick was constantly bullied with messages, including “Go kill yourself,” and “Why are you still alive?”

He said parents of all 15 girls have cooperated with detectives and several cellphones and laptops have been confiscated. Judd said charges could be filed — including cyber stalking.

“If we can get any evidence of a criminal offense, the person or persons involved will be punished,” he said.

Before her death, Sedwick had searched questions online related to suicide, including “How many over-the-counter drugs do you take to die?” and “How many Advil do you have to take to die?”

Detectives also found photos of Sedwick with razor blades lying on her arms and with her head resting on a railroad track, Judd said.

Judd said a 12-year-old boy in North Carolina, who Sedwick met through social media, knew of her plan. Sedwick messaged him only hours before her death saying she was dead and “I’m jumping, I can’t take it anymore.”

Sedwick also changed her name on a free messaging application to “That Dead Girl.”

Judd said detectives are trying to investigate the social media applications that Sedwick used, including Kik and Ask.fm, but many of the websites are based in other countries.

If detectives can find evidence, according to Florida law, the girls could be charged with felony cyber stalking because Sedwick was under 16 years old.

“If you bully somebody online and it’s reported to us and we can build a credible case, we will charge you,” Judd said.

I think many of you have already "read between the lines" but the whole point of this thread was actually due to online bullying. Bullies never grow up, IMO.

Coily, while you and I may disagree on certain political issues, you are a person and no one deserves to be bullied, no matter what. Thank you for speaking up.
