Just wondering if 8 AA batteries gives you 12 volts. Why can't I
use my truck battery? I could put it in the back pack with a set of
jumper cables to the machine. It would always be charged from
the trip there. I don't think I would drain enough power off it that
I would not be able to start the truck on return and if I did I could
just catch it in gear. So tell me do you think I would get better
depth with the detector?

The batteries I am using now are testing at 1.6-1.7 volts and do
last for 18-20 hrs. but they have not helped with the depth. I need
to get deeper into this. I want to find those things that I need a
dragline shovel to remove the overburden from to get at.

P.S. My turn to play jester.

then get a better detector.

Truck battery will last longer, no difference on the depth, messing with the voltage will probably just damage your machine. Its regulated anyways somewhat.

ok, this was a funny read!

now the reality...
modern metal detectors are basically small computers. computers need very clean, regulated power supplies. inside the metal detector theres a regulator so the detector can continue to operate efficiently as the battery voltage goes down.

hooking a huge battery to it will only result in longer battery life if the voltage is right. if the voltage is too high, a burnt detector.

This sounds like you are telling me I may have to take the
voltage regulator off the firewall and take it with me too.
Now I am starting to understand why they say you need other
stuff to go with the detector.

Bout hits it right on the head. Getting deeper would always be a great thing for all detectors. But many a great find has been found in the 1 - 4 inch range. So research and patience would probably pay off far better than anything else.

So I guess I will not get a chance to use a shovel.

I wonder if there is an attachment for any of those cordless tools out there to do the digging LOL They have everything else.
