✅ SOLVED Brass Curio - Possibly from 1915

Please help me identify this brass curio. There are two separate edges with inscriptions that are worn and hard to read. On one side it appears to read FALFEB-8 1915. On the other edge it appears to read FAB165. The inscriptions are guesses.

it says Pat. Feb 8 1915 (patented). let me do some looking and see if we can figure out what it is

not having any luck finding anything relating to the patent date. of course the set screw and flat parts on either side are for attaching it to something. It is somewhat ornate, so it stands to reason it is meant to be positioned somewhere that it would be visible. boy, it's a tough one :icon_scratch:

Yes I searched FEB 8,

1915 as well as 1912, 1913, 1916, 1918 and 1919 in case we got the date wrong.

Great ID Anduril!!! Im glad this SOLVED thread wasnt moved BruceR.8-) I guess I didnt check design patents. I dont know what I did but the Google Patent search has changed a couple years ago and I still cant get used to it. And I always forget to search Design Patents because they are different. Great ID.

I used the digital library over at Hathi Trust.
They seem to have a rather complete set of USPTO Gazettes digitized.
Text search is still "iffy" -- which is to be expected. (One hardly ever knows what phrase to search for anyway.)

The task was made easier by the fact that the item in question was quite literally the 4th design patent issued in Feb, 1916 - so it didn't take too long to spot it. :icon_thumright:

US patents (utility, design and plant) are not issued every single day, or on weekends, holidays, etc...
And, at least in recent times, the US Patent Office only issues new patents on Tuesdays. **
So, I was able to rule out several of the potential years because no patents were issued on Feb 8th of those years.
Only 1916 had a Feb 8 that fell on a Tuesday.

** I'm pretty sure that's right, but someone will correct me if wrong.
I actually have (4) patents, and each of them was indeed issued on a Tuesday.
(The examiner submits them for publication on the prior Thursday after all Claims are allowed, etc..)

There is both an art and a science to understanding how the Patent Office works.
The science part is knowing which brand of aspirin works best!!
