BRASS KEY ?

Got out for a very short hunt and dug a few coins and this brass. It looks like a key but has no part on the end and never did.

some keys like that are 2 piece. the bit" part on the end would have been iron and could have corroded away or broken off.

The end of it is broken off. Once you clean the dirt off, you'll see the break. It was originally longer, and that's where the part you're looking for would've been attached.
