i test all non ferrous metals with a very strong magnet (from a shakeup flashlight) and it seems to pick up some magnetism from almost 100% of suspected brass pieces. it doesn't "stick" but you can tell there's some zap to it. i go to thrift stores and yard sales for stuff and it seems like good brass isn't that common. am i doing something wrong or is this true??? some brass basics for me if you'd be so kind.

Yeah, its true. Many household things, and especially cheaper lamps, with a brass colour are brass plated steel. You'll get to be able to recognize the difference with a glance eventually.

Skippy is correct.... Though even now I still always use a magnet to check. I rarely am wrong on my instict nowadays, but I'd rather be safe then sorry.
