One thing no one mentioned, the guys saying no metal detecting in their parks may very well be metal detecting them themselves.. I say no signs then call the law out and I will gladly comply.. But a park grounds keeper and no signs, I'm not buying it.. That's just me..

I'm sure there are some ways around this issue. I like the 'rusty nail' technique. "Hey you don't want somebody stepping on this do you?

Besides, I always clean up an area as I do my searches. My gf brings extra plastic bags for the refuge. Maybe that is an idea to get some good
press for a change. I do geocaching too and we have these clean up bashes which helps with public opinion.

Anybody else here, help clean up as they are detecting?

I go detecting in NY all the boroughs. You need a yearly permit. No charge YET. Some parks are off limits already.

Get Ready Folks, the CONTROLS AND LOSS OF FREEDOMS WILL BE COMING YOUR WAY!!!!

We who fill our holes, return objects when we can find owners, are respectful to others WILL loose out IF we allow those who ruin sites and those who just want to see us gone to rule over us.

Get your clubs talking with all clubs in your states and around the United States as only when we are in large numbers will we have any clout with Our Government! He who speaks loudest, has the most people behind them, will be heard and served and all others will loose out. Band Together, it is the best thing we can do! Then promote club cleanups in your local areas with banners telling who's out there helping the general community. All of these positive activities coupled with the Political Merging of our numbers Might help us maintain our rights.

Look what happened in California with dredging, not enough folks got involved and it got shut down. Now it has to go to court rooms to be modified and there are no sure things once you enter a courtroom not even if you have iron clad proof can you be sure of Justice in a U.S. court room.

If you want to keep your rights then you MUST get involved!

Good luck to us all, 63bkpkr

Next thing they'll be putting up signs "No Fishing Allowed in the Atlantic Ocean" per PETA. No Sun Tanning Allowed on the beach as sun tan oil spill might be hazardous per EPA. And the list could go on and on until the Pursuit of Happiness is a thing of the past. >:(

This the truth, I lived in Daytona '67 - '71, was really nice when family came to visit and did not need a license for shrimpin or fishin in salt water and you could drive and park on the PUBLIC BEACH look at it now!

Our defenses are puny when it comes to keeping banning from happening and far less effective--if ever--in getting bans rescinded. Austin, for example bans MDing in its parks except for special circumstances such as a specific need (lost ring in x area, etc.). Then a written permit or email is required, hunts must be done in teams, a record kept of what is recovered (not trash) and turned in.

I think one of the best defenses we can offer is to say that we HELP the grounds by removing some items. These would be pull tabs. bottle caps. The latter are really unsightly. Our best service is probably in removing the bits of aluminum cans that are chewed up by mowers and are a very real hazard to bare feet!

I live in James City County, Virginia (Williamsburg & Jamestown) they have a ban on MD'ing in the county parks...I am not sure how long the ban has been in place. There is an old camp ground near me that belongs to the county and they are doing nothing with it. Plus we have a lot land under US Park Service control (No MD'ing there). It would be nice just be able to hunt in this old camp ground and the beaches along the James River, but not allowed. The government is fast taking away our freedom and rights...they want total control of our lives. When they have total control, we will be just like China, North Korea, Cuba and others like them.

They have already banned MD in all state parks water hunting up to your knees only with a excuse of something you lost, DNR was trying to say all things 50 years old was illegal to dig and keep I think they raised it to 100?? That would mean a 1960 penny was a way to incarnate you all arrow heads are illegal to own. And one of the counties have put a $$$ fee to use public parks. Should we be thinking just what's in the ground that they don't want you to know about? Or what are they going to put in the ground in the future? Be careful what you say in public places they could be listening :laughing9:

Had one fellow who came into the hobby shop I work at who had never used a detector before..He bought one with the express purpose of going to Lithia to MD. I passed on the info on the law and he said he didn't care and was going to do it anyway. I asked him to get back with me and advise what it anything happened. He has never come back into the store and that was three months ago. Wonder if he still has a detector?

It is within your rights as a shop employee or owner, that if someone says they are buying a detector to "break" the law, that you do NOT have to sell to that individual...I surely would have escorted him straight to the door...

Back during my younger days when I first discovered the hobby, I left areas looking like a battlefield, sneaked into swimming pools, churches, climbed many fences and even low crawled during midnight hours onto private historical sites and locations with my gear strapped to my back. When people who lived in those old historical homes left for the weekend, I'd even sneak onto their property, nothing was off limits. Treasure was everywhere back then...now days, if you dig a Walker, you'd think you struck gold.

Probably just some young kids (like we all were at one time) with their first MD'er....

Perhaps all these rules and regulations being imposed by all these districts is just a back door (or front door if you will) for the politicians getting their hand in the public purse (ie) tax dollars. Some fool politicians want to make sure freedom is not free. We still can vote for free thank God. Dig up the bums and vote them out.

They should put on the sign "No Armadillo's Allowed!". I've been detecting in a park a couple of times and holes were everywhere. Some grounds keeper voiced his anger >:( at me and I came right back at him and told him that an Armadillo did it and pointed to the culprit over by the trees. Any Moron can look at the hole and tell that an animal did it. ;D
People are Idiots especially those who sit on City Councils in an office. If you attend any hearings on Planned Banning of Metal Detecting please tell them about the Armadillo issue. 9 time out of ten, an Armadillo is to blame. But you're just :BangHead: against a wall trying to convince these idiots.
Good luck!

They really need to develop a " Leave no Trace" law. If you metal detect and leave trash and visible signs of digging you get cited, makes more sense than no metal detecting.....just a thought. :icon_pirat:

I find this really sad. I know the new show "Diggers" has already attracted a group to start the banning of the show. Saying
" It's disturbing history " Now I think.. "It's not really considered history till that object is found and said to be apart of history." Another thing is, is that if we didn't find these somewhat " historic items " would they just rot in the ground? Then it would never be considered or even known as historic.
I believe the real problem is is that the owners are jealous because we make more money than them,so says my uncle anyhow. I think about what my uncle said and I find that possible in some cases, depends on what the object you find are and who the person that is metal detecting is.

I say, "Well if you really want to ban us from metal detecting, find,go ahead,we will just make things worse. Especially for new people that have never metal detected before."

I would ask the director to put in writing so you can show the grounds keepers. Too many government workers get the idea that they own public property and can control what goes on there.
