I hunted hard in this area that finally got cut. 1st target was the Buff and I thought OH Yeah, Here we go! But it was the only coin, dug a lot of trash including what looked cut up aluminum from one of those reflector posts for a driveway. one piece was small enough that I thought I had a coin ball. When I dug the hammer, it had a lot of dirt stuck to it and I thought for a moment that it looked like a hammer but forgot about it until later when I emptied my pouch at the house. Then as I wiped it clean(er), I realized that it was for sure a hammer and a percussion hammer at that. So then I took it to a wire brush and cleaned it up better. At 1st I thought it was from a double barrel percussion shotgun but the hammer was just too massive for a shotgun but perfect for something like a musket only it is for the left side. I just never thought about left handed muskets being made and it may not be an actual musket hammer but it is very much like the 58 cal musket that I once owned. any ideas? the buff was a no date. 20180430_113211.jpg 20180430_113231.jpg 20180430_113319.jpg 20180430_115349.jpg 20180430_115410.jpg 20180430_115423.jpg

Nice old buff. That percussion hammer is really old. No idea how old. Very nice relics. And wow, those pull tabs were no doubt driving you nuts!

no, not a side by side for two reasons at least not a shotgun anyways, 1, way too massive in size and 2, the inside cavity where it would hit the cap is very large for a large musket cap (which I have many of.) most shotgun hammers that I have seen were slimmer in design, the hammers on muskets were made heavy duty for actual fighting and were to handle the rigors of war.
