What am I missing?

So why would an experienced mine explorer venture one step further without being tied off to his buddies? Or reverse his tracks and get out of there?
The lesson learned by this tragic experience is obvious.

Reminds me of a ooollllllddddd saying SAFTEY FIRST !!!!! It's just a shame that ANYONE would lose their life... just because they weren't be safe enough... Just a sad thing to read... just sad
