The XJ9 and the XJ9-3050 are two totally different detectors, so that manual won't help. I own the 3050 as well so I can help anyone who is wondering what settings to use. First off, make sure you don't drag the coil across the ground or grass. This will trigger many false readings. Secondly the "sweet spot" for adjusting the sensitivity is usually 7, 8, or 9. 7 has less depth but is better for areas that might have electrical/RF interference or very trashy ground. 8 or 9 is good for rural areas. Just hit adjust until "sens" is selected and use the + and - keys to get where you want it. For ground balancing first find a spot on the ground that's not finding any metal with full discrimination, then hit mode until you get to "all metal" on the screen. Set the gnd bal knob to the "p" while holding the coil about waist level and hit the gnd trac button. Then lower the coil. If you hear tone before you lower the coil or after lowering the coil to the ground raise it again...ever so slightly turn the gnd bal knob counter clockwise, hit gnd trac button again and repeat lowering the coil. Repeat these steps until the first setting on the gnd bal knob that does not produce tone when you lower the coil to the ground. Then sweep the area around with the coil and you should hear short bursts of tone for metal that's discovered. Tone becomes steady when coil is centered over item, great for pinpointing.
