No matter what resister you add in front of the headphone - the headphone will always be 30 ohms. All you did was reduce the signal voltage to the headset. I can see why you thought that it might work.
I have always ran cheap headphones usually 32 ohms. But recently I bought some 64 ohm wireless headphones from Radio Shack part #33-1253 and they sound twice as good. Pick you up a set. RS gives you a 30 day risk free warranty.

You can often up the volume by changing the resistor inside a machine attached to the headphone socket. An ajustable one is best as you can set what you need taking care that its not so loud to damage your hearing.

Token,
I didn't know they offered a 1 year warranty for $5.00. Is that for all headphones? If so, that's a good deal!
