I am still trying to Identify this item. It was found along with alot of 1800's Flat Buttons on the Left and the coins are on the Right all from the 1800's. Notice the (2 ) Dolphins in the Frame . Thanks-goldnugget,

I've seen your piece.. on the blog.
What does the other side look like?
And can you add some info on the site?
Are the buttons military or civilian?
The first thing that comes to mind is some sort of decorative piece from a horse bridle or harness.

It is nautical as shown by the sharks. it looks a little like an old small swivel gun mount. The two peaces on the sides kept you from swiveling on your own men in the heat of battle. Just my guess. Frank...
