You consider how it's made, the size, the location dug, then you try to fit it in with the history of balls from certain eras and match it to your site. There's usually enough hints to have a good idea, but sometimes it's just a best guess.

Some solid "cannon balls" were not cannonballs at all but rollers used in mills. Lots of times these will be oblong shaped and not pefectly round

It was found in a lake using a CZ 21,14 inches down. There was a civil war camp within 2 miles of the lake in Akron,Ohio. My only concern is the ball is 6lbs, but it is made of lead. Thanks for your info.

Being lead it's probably something other than a cannonball.
