I don't normally dig overloads directly on top but I just had to dig this one. Only about 2 inches down . After some research this is a chimney crane for open hearth cooking in the colonial home. The bracket on top was mounted into the masonry . Very ornate and awesome to know that this was in fact made by a real colonial blacksmith. All that remains of the old home are a few bricks and some bog iron sandstone.

I cleaned up the chimney Crain or pot Crain as it's sometimes called. I found one like it on the net for sale for 750.00. It cleaned up well. I know we usually show coins and small relics here but I just love this piece of americana.

I wonder. What would those colonials think about their great(times 6) grandkids, running around with equipment and digging up their old, rusty chimney cranes 2-300 years later. ;)

Those overloads can sure fool you! I'm glad you dug and brought back a real piece of Americana. Bet that would look good all cleaned up!
