Found these today at a yard sale. $2 for all of them. The lady thought they were fake. Guess she did not read silver coin right on the side of them...

When I get some time I’m planning on researching them. Just have not gotten there yet. Wanted to share.

Guess it would be a good idea to carry a magnet. You could sell them as reproductions maybe?

For $2 bucks, the silver alone on any of these coins would be worth the purchase.

Unfortunately they may be plated with magnesium if they have a steel core.

Or maybe nickel, since nickel is magnetic.

Ya its doubtful those ones have any silver at all, not even plating.

Now the fake 1 oz silver bullion coins/bars they flood us with have a thin silver plating. With whatever core, copper alloy usually. Or lead alloy of some type.

I always carry a small magnifying glass on a cord, around my neck, when I go swap meets and yard sales. I have hot glued a neodymium magnet to it. I was at a swap meet and saw a pile of great looking Morgan’s and Mexican peso coins. I picked up a few and could feel a nice sharp reeds. He only wanted $5 each. While looking at them with my glass I secretly tapped my magnet on them. All stuck.

I told him I wanted several because I collect counterfeit, but I will only pay one dollar easy. He got insulted and angry, they are not fake. I showed him my magnet and how well it worked. I turned around and left. I went down a few booths and looked back. He was looking very close at the coins. I think he really thought they were real. I burst his bubble.

I really do collect fakes. My best 1909 S vdb almost unc.cent.

Would love to see pics of the fake 09 s vdb, Dan!

Here it is. I took these closeups to send to someone that said he could tell. He says fake.

This was given to me (free) by a coin dealer. He had been fooled and he pulled it out of a business card sized box that was full of coins. I assumed all were counterfeit.

Jokingly I asked the dealer what I could get if I sold it.

With a grin he said 20 years.

Thanks, Dan. So, the whole coin is fake? I would think someone added the "s" to a 09 vdb, but I don't see it. Interesting coin and story.
