Civil War Battle of Newtonia...Missing Gold

In S.W. Missouri...close to Neosho, Missouri there is a small town, whats left of it, called Newtonia. There was a battle that took place there during the civil war. Legend has it that during the battle the confeterate army buried either a shipment of gold or a shipment of pay that was suppose to be used to pay the confeterate solders. At this point I really don't have much more than this information. I don't know if this is true or just local legend. However, the battle didn't cover a very large area...mostly farmers fields now...and as far as I know the area is not protected like a national battle field would be, so detectors shouldn't get anyone in trouble.
Anyone know anything about this Legend Would love to hear any in put anyone out there might have on this particular legend!!!!

I have heard to same story. It sounds like its buried all over Missouri, however I herad it was the Springfield area.
