Found this in my attic as I was moving from my house (very old house). I thought it might be civil war, but probably a fake or something knowing my luck ;) It was in an old wooden crate and has some slight water damage and is dirty, but generally it's in pretty good shape.

The coat:

Back of buttons, Text reads "Waterbury Button Co. - Conn."

Tag, Text reads "33R - 8405-113-9851"

Thanks for any info, I just thought it was cool.

Those are U.S. Air Force buttons; so, if they're original to the coat, the earliest possible date for it would be 1947.

nice find, what ever it is. I bet it would look great in the airforce museum.

Definitely a newer find, Scuba. You can tell by the tag sewn into the back of the coat and the materials it's made from. :-\ In fact it looks like the coat my hubby brought home from the Air Force.....25 years ago.

Good luck next time. :)

I'll take $30 for it anyday, thanks for the Ebay link ;) That's almost a tank of gas...which should get me to the next great hunt!

ScubaSeeker-

May not be worth a whole lot to you, but the look on the face of the owner/owner's family, if it's returned to them, might be priceless!!

Just a suggestion..

I've noticed that vintage clothing is making a comeback, retro 70's style shirts with the butterfly collars, bell bottom pants and platform shoes with a goldfish in the heel. Big $$$$ makers.

Is somebody playing Stayin' Alive in the background.......

USAF Overcoat, they were discontinued in the early 80s, I still have mine from basic training issue.

I was in the USAF from '62 through '66 and that particular coat was not issued during my tenure. We got a big old heavy wool coat that looked like a blanket with buttons on it. Of course no one ever wore it because it looked crappy and in cold climes the issued an insulated parka. Monty

Should be a date/manufacturer tag in the inside right hand pocket.

Ahh, found the tag on the left hand inside breast pocket, Newell Clothing Company. No date listed, and space for Name, Rank, and SR # but nothing is filled in, so I guess returning it to the family is out. It was fun, and certainly an interesting find, thanks for all the help.
