Not many keepers today, got a new permission with Irishdoc56, an 1815 house. Found this beautiful button, wondering if someone could shed some light on the variety

Congrats on a very nice button sir! I have seen these posted as Officer's buttons before, and am wondering why they are considered officer's? Just curious . . .

Usually officers buttons were three piece a front a back and a ring holding them together. Everyone else just got two piece buttons

That is a NY coat button. It would have been worn by a NY Staff Officer. It is made by Scovill company. State seal buttons were generally worn by the officers, where as the soldiers typically wore eagle buttons or specialized (i.e artillery, infantry etc.) or even plain flat buttons. Many times it depended on the resources at hand.
