Is this the house in Kushla? Doesn't resemble it.
Magee Farm in Kushla
Thursday, September 15, 2005
By ELIZABETH STUART
Staff Reporter
An antebellum farmhouse in Kushla that survived a war and countless storms since it was built in 1848 made it through Hurricane Katrina without major damage, its curator said.

Magee Farm, located at 6222 U.S. 45 about 12 miles north of Mobile, has been open to the public for about a year. Winds from Katrina last week tore a couple of new shingles off the house and some of the screen on the porch, but did not damage the structure or break any of the original glass windows, said Jem Golden, its curator and archivist.

Some trees on the property also fell down during the hurricane that hit the Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, but have since been cleaned up, he said.

Civil War enthusiasts will be at the farm Saturday for a re-enactment.

"This old house came through like a champ," Golden said. "She's weath ered a few storms."

The farmhouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988 and was opened to the public in August of 2004.

Magee Farm is the site where Confederate Lt. Gen. Richard Taylor, commander of the last Confederate forces east of the Mississippi River, met to discuss a cease-fire and surrender with the Union Maj. Gen. E.R.S. Canby on April 29, 1865.

The two-story was owned by local businessman John Magee at the time.

According to historic accounts compiled by Golden, the generals went behind closed doors in the front parlor of the home agreed to end the fighting. On May 4, 1865, Confederate forces under Taylor's command officially surrendered in Citronelle. Confederate forces officially surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Va., on April 9, 1865.

The farmhouse is full of artifacts and offers a glimpse into how people lived about 150 years ago. The furniture dates back to 1854. The dishes date back to 1830. The clothing dates back to 1800.
