Civil war Sword 1860's

This is not one of your normal finds that I have posted in the past, but this one I had to share with the forum. Little over a week ago I was working in an area that had a number of Estate sales going on, so I decided to check out one across the street from where we were working. It was very early in the morning so only a couple of people had showed up so far , I asked the man sitting at the door if he had any military items for sale and he said there are some pictures and a Civil war Sword in the other room. So I checked out the Sword , made him an offer for the piece and he accepted.

Now, I no very little on Civil war Swords but this model 1860 staff and field officer’s sword was a nice find and It will look nice hanging in the office!! Enjoy!!! and happy hunting!!!

Wow, how much did you pay, if you don't mind saying...

Amazing piece of history, any idea what it is worth (seems like it would be worth a lot of $).

Nice work.

That sword is in great shape, take it to a collectibles dealer for an appraisal.

Re: Civil war Sword 1860's

This sword is in very nice shape , the blade has some ware to it, so it may have been used at one time for some purpose. I paid $200.00 for it. I hope it was a good deal! The few pictures that they had were nice but had nothing in them that I would have been interested in. It was a nice find! HH

Re: Civil war Sword 1860's

Hey Seeker, bring it to an expert, since they have been reproduced since the 1920s. To be honest, the grip looks like it's in way to good of shape to date from the 1860s; but I am NOT an expert, so have it checked out.

Re: Civil war Sword 1860's

The whole thing looks too new, actually. The blade itself appears unusually distressed (even though this is not a combat sword), but that spiral-wrapped grip looks like it was made yesterday (the grip is usually the first thing to deteriorate). Does appear to be a reproduction. A real Civil War-era sabre in this shape would be worth many, many times what you paid for it.

BTW, I'm a collector of knives and blades, I actually practice with an authentic 16th Century German longsword, and I've been a member of Sword Forum International for some time. But don't take my word for it; you can go to Sword Forum International (http://swordforum.com), register for the forum and post your photos, and the experts in there will tell you very quickly everything you could want to know about your sword.

;)
