I went out yesterday not expecting much. I got a late start right of the bat. i finally get to the site I want to hunt sometime afternoon. Well, it wasn't to bad. In four hours of hunting I found tons of old cut nails and other suff, but the goodies where this lead seal, two fired musketballs, part of a clay pipe, a neat little tack, some folded up lead, and six buttons... one of which is this cool gilted button that says "This I'll Defend" with the date 1822. Any help with the id is appreciated. Well I know it's not banner material, but I thought I'd share it because I think this is one of my coolest buttons to date.

Great finds. I would love to find a pipe. The personal touch of something handmade so long ago is awesome! Well done! There must be a story behind the gilt button too! :icon_thumleft:

You posted more photos as I was typing! All I can say on the button is Wow!! Well done! I say banner on that!!!

This I'll defend was the motto of the clans Kincaid and Macfarlane. Plus apparently the visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822 spurred 19th century interest in the clans and a reawakening of Scottish culture and pride. http://tmp.kiwix.org:4201/A/Scottish_clan.html

Further reading suggests that he did a tour after ascending to the throne. This button must have been made to celebrate his visit. What great piece of history!!! Well done again!!!

The $80,000 dollar question. I may have found a website with details but the photo won't populate on my webpage. I will add it here shortly

The New York Historical Society has also been trying to figure it out.

Well, at least my assumption that a $50,000.00 education does not make one smart is correct.

I do hope that we can crack this nut though. I am very intrigued.
