I had to go to Halifax this morning to write an exam (aced it) and actually finished early. Got back into the valley at 1 pm and took a drive to find that some more fields have been mowed. I decided to try a field that a couple buddies and I had hunted briefly but didn't find a site...well, I found the site!!!
Hay was cut right down to the earth so the swinging was easy. Found the iron patch completely by luck and started hunting out from there. First target was the bent sporting button with the running hare...good sign I thought. A couple swings later I hit a signal that I almost immediately recognized as silver...dug down about four inches and popped out what I thought was my first Victorian 25 cent...nope. After a quick dip in the brook I discovered that it is an 1826 George IV silver shilling! This is the oldest British silver that I have found to date!
I feel like I made a pact with the devil...every hunt I am on I am finding the goods...after finding the shilling I left the field to return with a partner or two.
