Hello. I just had a question about modern commemorative gold coins. After 1982. I just wondered if their weights followed the newer gold coins or the older ones. So does a five dollar commemorative like the statue of liberty com. weigh a quarter ounce or a tenth of an ounce. I know most of these coins have more value that their melt value, but was just curious about thier wieghts. Thanks!

Tyler,

The weights vary by denomination. They are all 90% gold by weight. To determine gold content weigh the coin and multiply by .9. Gold Eagles and Bison coins are .999 gold and state this on the coin. If it isn't stated, it's 90%. Some have greater collector value and you can see this in the online price guides and some just keep up with melt. Lots of folks are buying gold these days at a premium (economic uncertainty) and they are hard to come by, so I wouldn't recommend the "melt route".
