the Tesoro Sand Shark to the White's Surfmaster PI. I have not been able to find much. I have the White's but it leaked again! and I have to send it in, again. Kind of getting tired of that. I like the depth but was wondering if the Sand Shark is better? I am also considering the new Whites Dual Field PI, but fear the leaking. I use a Minelab Excal 10 but when targets get few and far between I get my PI. I water hunt in the Gulf of Mexico in Florida.

Thanks for you help

The biggest advantage of the Excal is the ability to sound off on a good target very near or even under a iron nail where other detectors will null on the iron and because of masking affect will not sound off on the good target.

Besides the leaking of the White's the new coils want to float and this in fine for above water but really gets tiring in the surf after a while. Because of this the Sand Shark has the edge for me. Many say the newer orange o ring is better than the black one, but mine leaked with the orange one too and I know how to care for O rings. Two other advantages of the Tesoro's is the warranty and they never seem to need batteries. :headbang:

Sandman covered most of it, but I don't think the Tesoro warranty transfers from the original owner.

They may honor it, but I don't think they have to. This may be an important point as the Sand Shark is currently out of production, so you can onyl buy used. Apparently the maker of their rubber seals folded up and Tesoro is working on getting a replacement.

As to the leaking White's, I was told that there was a problem for cetain period of time in manufacture, especially those with a black seal. The newer ones with the orange seal are not reporting problems. In many cases (not necesarily yours), the White's were also leaking because they weren't being closed properly.

The Dual Field is supposed to be an excellent PI machine, its chief advancement being advertised as being more senstive to gold. Experts using the Dual Field seem to agree.

I know Sandman doesn't like the Whites due to the floating coil. I spoke to one guy who uses one in the surf here in Florida and he says he doesn't have a problem.

Of course, getting detectorists to agree on anything is like trying to herd cats.

You could try a post on the forum that specialises in pulse machines (don't know if I'm allowed to mention it). Also if you check out Mr.Bill's posts (Bill Crabtree) who has offered a very good service for years turning the Whites Surfmasters into what they should have been in the first place he says sensitivity to gold was improved with the D.F. because it was so poor on the Surfmasters.
I didn't like the performance that the Surfmaster Pro offered as they had replaced the pulse delay control and substituted a gain. u/S level to high as well. The Dual Field at least rectified both of these problems but its performance lags way behind many much older pulse machines.

I've had no trouble with leaks and the wider orange seal is a hundred times better than the original black one that was so thin it would either drop out on the floor unnoticed when you were closing the detector or twist slightly as the control box was closed and not create a proper seal. I had to do an in the field repair abroad with a Beachhunter I.D. That was worse to reseal than all the other Whites. Thank God you don't normally have to open the control box on that one.
