Super on you taking your son with you and building memories npquilm. Thanks for sharing...

Welcome to the site! You did pretty good for hunting seeing it was 3 yrs since your last. Actually I havent done that good in about 3 months. I still go anyway though, rock

You have not lost your touch in finding artifacts. Good hunt with the son.
Welcome to t-net sir and thanks for the finds.

We're there prehistoric horses in North America? What are they called? It is most certainly fossilized.

Put the tooth in the fossil forum they will know.

If i'm not mistaken, the modern day horse originated in America. It then migrated throughout different parts of the world. Became extinct here towards the end of the last ice age. It wasn't till the 1500s when it was brought back over here by the Spanish explorers.

That looks like a bison tooth to me.
They look very similar to cow.
But the peaks on the chewing surface aren't as pronounced.
If it's definitely fossilized I'm pretty sure its bison.
Here are a couple of my fossil horse teeth for comparison.

From what I'm looking at.. The chewing surfaces on your example of horse tooth..as well as mine are markedly different than that of the poster.
A couple different angles would help.. but I'm sticking with bison.. upper molar actually.
Look at your post.. where it says bovid.

I'm wrong
I finally got on the P.C. and got good zoom.
Good call..horse it is.

Looked at everyone's pics and did some Internet searching. I am going with horse it has no pronounced ridges like a cow or bison tooth. Instead it is basically flat other than the texture which is like all the fossilized horse teeth I am finding on the net. Thanks for the help and the archaeology lesson on horses!

Cool finds! I take my 10 year old boy and my 2 year old girl. I dont find much but its a nice way to spend an afternoon together !! :)

The tooth is probably from a bison, I've found several in a creek by my home.
