(COATED THE COIN WITH BLUE RIBBON)
I believe its a King George II halfpenny? Its in great shap and i am wondering how I should clean it. Should I just try to wipe away the dirt with a toothpick or drop it in olive oil or mineral oil? Thanks for looking.

PS... I think cleaning it dry might be the best bet because you have it looking pretty good so far. Any green you lose is going to be black like the places you can see where it has thinned. Hard to say for sure looking at a pic.

Nice coin.
I wouldn't try to clean it too much.
I have destroyed a few of those by trying to clean them.
Not even soap.
Bio-Professor's method words pretty good with d-coke.

Re: Crisp 1723 King George copper.

I used a toothpick and got most of the dirt off. I may just keep it as is. There are lighter green areas where the patina is chipped. My thought was if I used mineral oil or some other solution it would bring the detail out, but I dont want to reck the patina or make it to dark. :icon_scratch:

I am still not sure what this coin is yet. Iron patch seems to be onto it. :icon_thumleft:

Nice coin. Coppers can be safely cleaned using hydrogen peroxide without stripping any patina/charm. Pour the peroxide in a cheap piece of tupperware and microwave until fairly warm (don't let it boil). Bathe your coin in the heated solution until the coin's crud fizzes off (you'll notice an alka-selzer effect). I occassionally reheat the peroxide as keeping it warm will accelerate the process. Blot the coin with a clean piece of cotton from time to time, as well. This is what works for me -- others, I'm sure, will opine.

Halfpenny, and I would leave it as is because there is nothing to clean.

Hmmmn, somehow I missed this post, that is a very nice Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny (judging by the size of it on your hand). If it were mine, no way would that be done with conserving it. Looks like a fair amount of crud is still on it, not patina. But your choice to keep as is. Just try a wet q-tip on some portion of it, like the edge or somewhere on the Reverse and you will most likely see the crud come off on it.

Re: Crisp 1723 King George copper.

Great looking coin on your avater DFX. ;D
I am going to lightly brush on some blue ribbon to protect it and then leave it as is. Interestingly this coin is in the red book. It is a hibernia. William Wood of England in 1722 got permission from King George I to mint these coins for Ireland. Woods owned a copper mind. Ireland rejected the coins, they were offended they were not confronted a head of time before they were minted. Wood eventually gave them to King George for a royalty payment of 3000 pounds a year. King George shipped the coin off to Colonial America. Interesting back story to this coin. The red book says its worth $50 dollars in VG condition. Historical value = PRICELESS!!!!!!!!
