rarely if ever have i seen anyone post any artifacts that are cubed in shape be it something used on the ceremonial side or be it something that was used as a tool etc. Several years ago on an adena site I found a cubed sandstone pc with a shaft abrader on one of the 6 sides. It was perfectly cubed and the sides were 2 1/4 in. on the dot on all sides. Wish I still had the pc to share with everyone but have somehow misplaced or lost it. Does anyone have any cubed artifacts?

That looks like it could have been a survey stone

I have been told that before. But, wouldn't modern man have had to alter the stone? If so, why aren't his tooling marks visible? I have reevaluated my original thoughts, and decided myself that this is no artifact. Mother nature makes quartz crystals. Nature not only makes them, but, perfects them. All faces of a quartz crystal is a perfect 60 degree angle! Mother nature is the true genius, she made us!!

Aren't loaf stones cube shaped?

No, not really. They are "loafed" shaped like a loaf of bread, hence the name.

Here are a few of mine, plus a couple of Cones.

I think I have one of those. A friend of mine has a jasper one. He doesn't really collect artifacts. If I'm not mistaken, I have heard they were smoothing the inside of pottery. Is that correct?? I will post what I have in another thread. Mine may just be a rock. Seems the more I learn, the more confused I am. Lol!!

surveyors would often choose rocks that were a little odd shaped etc. to help with identifying the rocks later. I have a friend that is a surveyor and he talks about surveying a lot, I think I heard him say something to that effect before.

I doubt Loaf Stones were used just as Pottery polishing tools. I can't see putting that much work into something that difficult to make just to use for that when a simple stone would do.

Here's a few more pics of that piece that show the pecking and the flat bottom. Trust me, it's definitely and artifact and came right off a Ft Ancient village site.

This sounds like your description. Found in Adena/Hopewell territory. Material is sandstone tumbled and deposited by the Teays River. Not a perfect cube but pretty close!

They actually made grinders and nutting stones here square. I have found 1 of each since this post.

An agatized petrified wood cube. Also a beach find. Brought in to Western Washington from Oregon, or the other side of the Cascade Mountain range (Eastern Washington).

A guy who has collected for years told me that this “may” have been a stone used to pound, acorns, berries, etc., mostly due to it’s size and flat face. On TNet I was told it’s just a rock, due to no evidence of being altered by man. Then I see “artifacts” that look a lot like it. I’m very confused. I don’t sell any items I find, and I kept this cause it costs me nothing to store it. I don’t doubt anyone, but I sure can’t see the difference sometimes. I have a lot left to learn.
