Two weeks ago we got permission to hit an old yard from the mid 1800's,it was actually two yards. One yard still had a house standing and an empty Lott next to it where the old house was torn down.
We started off in the yard where the house was still standing. We found a few wheats and a Indian head,no date. Not much else to show for so we started heading for the old sidewalk leading to where the the house was torn down next door.
Towards the end of the yard and close to the old sidewalk I got a good solid zinc/silver hit. Not expecting much I flipped the plug and got a glimpse of the edge of some brass piece. When I pulled it out of the hole I knew I had something good, just not sure how good.

A CW Bridal Rosette

After the rosette over next to the old sidewalk we hit silver,3 silver dimes. First was a 56 Rosie, then a 44 merc, and last a 47 Rosie.

We didn't find much more to talk about. The Lott where the house was torn down was pretty much grown up except where the old sidewalk was.We plan on hitting it again when after we get a frost to knock down the weeds.

On a more serious note, what you have is a M1859 Civil War bit boss.

The photo above shows it in place on the bit.

Does that mean I can't call it a rosette anymore? lol Everywhere I see them they call them bridal rosette's.

Either way it's one of my better CW finds.

You may continue to call it a bridle (not bridal) rosette if you choose. But you'd continue to be wrong.

A bridle rosette is a decorative fastener that joins two transverse pieces of leather in the horse's bridle, and sits at about the horse's temple when on the horse.

A bit boss, is a decorative item that is applied to the metal bit that goes in the horse's mouth.

They are quite different things.

All that said, it is a very nice find indeed.

No sweat.

Not only is your piece of CW vintage, but it represents a pretty early example of engine-turned decoration.

Note the field behind the "US" where the background looks like what we'd call "spirograph".

That's engine-turning.
