I went back and found 8 more coins. 1916 Barber Dime ,1916 Buffalo Nickel,2- 1928 Lincoln Cents , a 1910-D,1926 -D ,1916 .
I don't know what the coin is under the Barber Dime but it is a hair larger than the Lincoln cents and it sticks to a magnet .
Here are some pictures of the tree.
I run the E-Trac coil inside the tree and got coin signals . I took the shovel and pried a hunk of bark from inside the tree and got 2 coins and dug the rest from inside the tree and the Barber Dime was over 14 or more inches deep. I put the E-Trac in pinpoint mode to get that dime or it would not have made a sound in all metal mode. Might have been that i couldn't move the detector back and forth very much.

All in one . Barber 001.jpg All the coins were probably pounded inside the rotten tree and some had fallen down and some sank in the dust.

That rusty coin that sticks to a magnet is probably a steel penny. The corrosion and rust can make it appear larger than a penny. Nice finds!

Very cool story... except it makes me think that I might have walked past a tree like that, and not been aware of it. Dang man.

Very well done sir.

That is strange that you have an iron coin there. My first thought would be the 1943 Steel penny but that just doesn't fit with the dates from the other coins. Everything you have is much earlier than that. Have you gotten any detail off of the magnetic coin? Nice finds!

I hooked up the battery charger for 15 minuets and that didn't do much so now it's in olive oil. I'll have to do some research on steel coins. i think other countries may have made them also.

They do have dents in the edge were they were pounded into the tree. They might have used the back of there hunting knife and pounded on it .

Great finds! :icon_thumright: We all detect the base of trees but few ever take the time to detect in a tree. I've detected bark at the trunk and have pulled bullets, but nothing else. Might the coins have been stashed long ago in a cavity of this tree, which later grew around them, and then rotted away?
