Arrived at the field & the farmer was raking our flat field into a fluffy mud mess. Shame as it had settle nicely. Two days before he drills it & we can go on it until the seed sprouts, so at least it will be flatter again soon.

In honour of the coin counters, I have kept tally for the first year ever! We just made our 200th exactly Roman Bronze Coin.

I got the hammered today (Dad had one yesterday, 2 in 2 days!) - Our First Edward III 1360s Penny

1670s Farthing
1720 Farthing
1747 Halfpenny
2 Roman Coins (200th was a large Sesterius)

Other finds:
Our First Fire Steel (I think they are called) - Used since Roman times to strike on flint to start fires - although mine looks 17th century??
Broken Roman Brooch (Fibula)
Nice Dandy button with loop - my first dig & on its edge :)

Looking forward to tomorrow, although I hurt like hell.

Thanks-I was wondering how this item got it's name-does it look like a crossbow?

Excellent work, as usual! 200 Romans in a year is nothing to take lightly--an impressive total! I like looking at your finds because you have identified everything. Your posts are like an online catalogue of metal detecting finds in England.

Fantastic--Oh, and congrats on the hammered. I have always liked the Edward III coins--how his profile looks a bit primitive and stylized. They're just wonderful silver coins.

Regards,

Buckleboy

As far as I'm aware its a Roman / Latin name. Never took latin at school so can't tell you where it derived from. When complete it does look a bit like a crossbow / normal bow.

I love that hammered coin and the one below it with the extra wide rim.

Once again. Congratulations and thanks for the cool post!

I was speaking to a local detectorist & he worked out that on his best Roman site, he needed to find 60 bronze coins to 1 silver. Made me think (as its the first year I have totals), I have 201 bronze to 7 silver (includes broken examples). Which is about 30 to 1. Now this is going to be a year to beat, not sure its possible. But theres always next year if my boby hold together ;D
