i haven't used the Delta but in machines I've had in the past, the notch feature eliminated a whole range of targets without effecting other areas. some regular discrimination adjustments are progressive....by that I mean that it starts at the low end of conductivity and progresses to the high end. If you want to keep gold and nickels but get rid of screw tops and other mid range junk targets, you couldn't do it with regular discrimination but you could with notch.
