I liked Western Auto when I was a kid because they had cool stuff.

You betcha... but if you were an Arkie or Okie kid, the real Fort Knox of boys toys was the Oklahoma Tire & Supply Co. or, in later years, OTASCO for short. A lot of noses got flattened against their windows around Christmastime in my hometown. I can still hear their old radio spots... "Thank you! Here's your change!" I'll bet some of the other guys like Monty and Stoney remember 'em, too.

Re: Do You Remember..........?

"Those were the days my friend...
we thought they'd never end..
we'd sing and dance..
forever and a day..."

Nat King Cole - Those Lazy Hazy Crazy Days of Summer

Playing Batman and Robin...
Playing The Lone Ranger and his faithful sidekick Tonto...
Making secret codes to write notes to your friends.
Weaving lanyards in summer camp to make key chains.
Roller skates you had to clamp on your shoes with a key.
Lego's
Mouse Trap board game.
Playing cards in the camper at night on the back of dad's truck when we were on vacation.

I still have an old 78 RPM record of the overature to William Tell (The Lone Ranger theme song). I would play it so much that the hole got too big and I had to center it on the record player spindle - otherwise it sounded really warped. I'd gallop through the house while it played pretending to be "The Lone Ranger". I'm sure my mom got sick of hearing it.

Re: Do You Remember..........?

Speaking of the Lone Ranger - "Happy Birthday, Tonto" - He was born 87 years ago today. (Unfortunately, he has passed on).

Games of wiffle ball at the local intersection.
Building tree houses and "forts".
Riding your bike everywhere and having to be forced to come in to eat dinner on summer nights.
Lighting bugs in glass jars.
Camping out in your friend's back yard.
Saturday morning cartoons.
The TV show "Emergency" with Johnny Gage & Roy Desoto. (It influenced my career choice)
The metal rockets that took one cap at a time & cap guns.
Lego's & Matchbox cars (I think my mom still has mine).
Coming in the house when the street lights came on.
Wondering "Who shot JR"
Dukes of Hazard & Dallas on Friday nights. Daisy Duke was cute.

I also think that the Little Rascals fire truck episode was the best, too

I remember as a youngster, taking my bath on Sunday evening and then watching "Red Skelton". They just don,t make 'em like that anymore.

Any other Fifties Fossils around here who can remember these?

Carbide cannons
Match rockets and bent paper clip launchers
Squawkers made with rosined twine and a big tin can
June bugs on strings
Swiss warblers
Dixie Boy firecrackers
Flip-book comics
Black-eye "telescopes"
When Hallowe'en masks were sweltering hot latex "false faces"
Orange wax Hallowe'en whistles
Playing 45 records at 78 for "chipmunk" music
Getting the teacher to run the film backwards instead of just rewinding it
Party-line telephones
Butcher paper
Banana stalks hanging on hooks at the neighborhood grocery
Buying bologna by the slice
Bread wrapped in wax paper (Mom saved the wrappers to "slick" her iron.)
Weekly Reader
Indelible purple pencils
Hitting all the dime stores the day after Easter for discounted candy
Little yellow bumps on rock-hard Super Bubble gum
Getting your teeth stuck ( I mean really stuck!) on a Sugar Daddy

June bugs on strings
:D :D :D We would tie a piece of thread on their legs and play for a long time flying them around.....wow...and I thought I was wierd!!!! My 4 sibblings and myself all took baths as kids on Sunday evening too....Then we would huddle up in front of the T.V. and watch Walt Disney Movie then Wild Kingdom........super fun times.....My sister and I would fall asleep in front of the sofa and dad would pick us up and carry us to bed...oh, we would have ice cream too after the baths.....with pop......
