Don't write off what is found at a convenience store

Picture this...

I worked in a convenience store, with gas, and a lady walks in to pre-pay for her gas, and she hands me ten dollars in coin change. I hate getting a lot of coins, but it's legal tender and there was nothing I could do about it.

So I looked down at the handful, and there were nine dollars worth of the walking Liberty half dollar, all silver, and all from the mid-to-late 1940's, and a near mint condition 1927 Peace dollar.

Needless to say, I was more than happy to trade my paper-thin ten dallar bill for that pile of coins.

I bet if she realized she gave you 5-10 times the face value of the coins she would be ticked. Sssshhhhh!

Poor woman was probably a single Mom trying to make ends meet and had to buy $10 worth of gas to get to one of her two part time minimum wage jobs. :'( But, you take em where you get em.

Re: Don't write off what is found at a convenience store

This happened back in November.

Before that I thought the same way, that it would happen to others, such as what happened to my sister-in-law while she worked at a Wal-Mart. Some clown got mundane items, and it totaled less than six dollars. Apparently these items were very important, because of the six dollars he handed to her, one of them was the big, one-ounce 99.99% pure Silver Eagle dollar, dated 1996. That's a high price to pay for a bottle of Coke!

At the moment, I don't have a digital camera, so I cannot verify my story (yet) with pics. :(

Congrats!

I used to work in a gas station after college, it is amazing how much silver and old bills showed up, that is how I started my collection.

Re: Don't write off what is found at a convenience store

The coins that I got from these stores amount to about $38.00 and change, face value. Most of the coins are Eisenhower dollars, one of which is silver. The rest, in addition to my Peace dollar find, are half dollars, all silver, and a few quarters and dimes.

Hah I did that when I was little - I don't remember taking them but I do remember the look on the bank ladies face when she emptied out my piggie bank on the bank counter and all these old coins came out. For some reason my piggie bank was also filled with talculm powder ;D. Apparantly my mother also found a gold sovereign under my bed from dads collection. I suspect my sister.
