Today Mr Stuff (Dave) drove up to hunt with me, and wow....we both had a KILLER day!

We hunted sidewalk curb strips and a couple old houses. Our finds were just awesome today. He was kicking my butt on silver and I grumbled that I had not YET dug a silver coin yet today and the very next signal was a solid 12-45 at 4-5"...........I cut the plug and opened it up. I saw a silver dime, pulled it out of the hole and right away I saw it was a merc....cool. I yelled at Dave, "hey I finally got a silver!" then I looked at it and saw the 1916, and nervously flipped it over and saw the D.....instantly I started shaking. I am still in utter amazement, this is a once in a lifetime find. Thank God I did not scratch it.

It got rinsed very gingerly with water, and took it straight to the bank safety deposit box until I can send it in to be graded and slabbed.

Other than that the rest of my finds were awesome, I ended up getting a silver trifecta, 1946 rosie, the 1916D merc, and a 1905 barber dime.

3 injuns, bunch of wheats, best being a 1909. A good luck token, buffalo nickel, play coin. Lead soldier, and bunch of clad as well.

I am still amazed, I took dirty pictures of the 1916-D and rinsed pictures as well. I can't wait to send it in, any ideas what it will grade?

Mr. Stuff had an awesome silver day.....I think he got a double trifecta of silver dimes as well as a silver half. What a DREAM hunt! thanks to everyone for looking!!!!!

that must have been a holy s*** moment when you first saw that d,i had a dream hunt today as well but not nearly as exciting as yours a 1900 LC, cuff button, child's gold plated ring, 1920 wheat an a 1934 dog tag. i am posting it tomorrow
How come this post wasn't deleted? I did same thing on another thread an mine was deleted for doing exact samething..... That 1916 D is what we're all looking for..awesome find!!!!!!!
i think because i put 3 * on the last letters instead of putting them just on the last two letters :dontknow:, i was pretty exited and would not normally write that but it is what i wanted to say at the time. i will try to keep the stars off my posts for now :icon_silent: :laughing9:

A coin that was 10 cents now has a giant value! Thanks for sharing a great story.

Looks like a VG-8 or even a little better. At VG-8 it lists at $1,650.
Excellent score.

That was a great hunt, love the dime but do not like the good luck symbol at all. Congratulations on the dime find. :icon_thumleft:

Congrat's on a great find and the banner!

However...the outer ring on the obverse side looks offset to me. It's thinner at the top than the bottom. Is this normal for a dime or is it just an optical illusion in the pic's?
Sometimes the die on one side or the other is misaligned a little bit, which will cause the strike on that side to not be perfectly centered. Really a pretty common occurance.

The 1916-D has returned home! Graded VG08 !!!!!!

Well after a long wait.....well it seems like a long time..lol. I got my
1916-D back today. I am SO HAPPY they did NOT mark it cleaned!!!! :hello2:
WoooHOOOOO. I was SO careful removing the dirt from it to not leave any scratches. I was nervous it would be marked as "cleaned" or enviromental damage from being buried.

As you can see in the pic, it was graded VG08, and that is just fine with me! :laughing7:

I am not sure if all of you see or not but I dug the 1916-D on Aug 27th, and all within about 2 and a half weeks, I dug 3 more 1916 mercury dimes. I found one 1916-S and 2 of the 1916-P.....crazy unreal! I included all of them in a pic below.

I doubt I will ever top this find, sure will be hard. I still feel extremely lucky to have dug such a rare coin, thanks to everyone for looking!!!!!

Congratulations again on the 16D. It's important to get rare coins graded & encapsulated, this way you have a genuine idea what it is worth and what people are paying for that type of coin. (if you decide to sell) Good job...........Rich. :icon_thumright: :icon_thumleft:

Excellent cleaning job! You have a super rare coin, one I've dreamed of finding. To me ,with the full rims and great strike, it looks under graded. Check out the others graded vg8, yours looks alot better! WHAT AN AWESOME COIN! I can't stop looking at it! If you had wiped it or harshly cleaned it, it would be just criminal. Congratulations on adding such a beautiful coin to the coin collecting community, it will be here long after we are gone.

I was thinking you might get a VG-10, but I guess it's just nice to get back a dug coin without a scarlet letter. Now I just gotta find one...

Glad to see you got the VG8 grade, but was hoping it would go higher. I admit I'm surprised they didn't grade it as environmentally damaged, though. I may have to start submitting to ANACS!
