Eagle Button Scovills & C.O. 1840 to 1850?

First thing my name is Bill. The button was found when gold panning, it was in the bottom of the pan with the gold. It is complete 2pc. brass button, smaller than a dime, eagle w/head facing right, three arrows in left claw, branch in the right claw, the wings go straight up next to the head and to a point. In the center of the eagle shield is a capital A. very find detail. On the back Scovills&C.O. and it maybe has 2 stars on the bottom. W/loop on back. Found about 3 miles north west of Folsom Ca. I have looked on (Ebay and button sites) but none have the detail. I have pic. but I don"t how to re size them yet. thanks Bill

If its got a A in the sheild its most likely an artillery button.

To resize your pics right click your picture and click open with paint then click image (resize/skew) change the 1st two blanks from 100% to 20% that will decrease your pic size, then just save as and post here.

A pic of the button would be great any artillery button is always a great find.

I was talking to a buddy yesterday about this button and how it found its way to this part of north Cal. pre war there were not many Feds here. The one I know about was John C. Fremont and he had 3 Artilary men with him, and had to pass hear here (1/2 mile from Alburn Folsom road) on the property just up from were I found the button there is a old bridge made of large stones only. It was completely covered with blackberrys and brush still has water flowing under it. the owner had never seen it. What do you think

Although an "A",(Artillery),is rare they do show up out here,as for "Eagle buttons they are very frequently found in Calif, and often have no military affiliation....so to speak, they were traded to Indians, veterans were in the gold fields seeking there fortunes, surplus, etc.

Kuger I agree there were some military here in the 1840 to 1850 and many years after that. In the spot I'm working on there are many grinding holes in the rocks from the Indians, so it could have been traded to them. I did find out that the man that lived there was murdered there by a man with a axe . He lived there and farmed always had money but was a poor farmer, the ground is nothing but granite! I have taken out a oz. and a 1/2 of gold with a small sluice box. Bill

WoW!!Thats pretty good!Yes there definitely military presence here, especially during the Civil War,there were troops stationed at some of the rich mines as protection, especially copper mines.Calif.played a huge role in the "Great War",that it doesnt get credit for.The 1St.New York Volunteers were also here and one of there buttons is at the top of my "to Dig",list.I bought one but thats not the same!!!
