Hello Tneters.
I have not posted in a few months because I moved to Romania to study medicine. (Hard to get in to med school in Germany)
I finally got my Authorization to hold and use a metal detector in this country last week.
Today was my first hunt.
It was below freezing and snow covered the forest ground but I had to get out to detect!
Hunt started out slow with a few shrapnel pieces and some common coins.
After 4 hours of hunting we were ready to go back. On the way back I had to climb down a steep slope and was just swinging my detector to keep it moving..
I got a decent signal that made me stop half way down the slope.
I uncovered a silverish looking object.
First I saw this:

Then I saw an eagle head.

I pulled the object out and was disappointed because a hole in the head and the bottom part told me this object was definitely fairly modern, not Roman-age antique at least.

Back home cleaning revealed what I think (Thanks Westfront for the suggestion) Is a sabre handle. From the making I am guessing around world war 1 or maybe around the 1900's as the oldest posibility.
The hole in the head is for a decorative attachment screw or nail to fit in...
The sparing on the bottom is to fit into the ring of the hilt I believe (see below)

Definitely a heart-stopper when it was in the hole but now still a cool find, I feel.
No other signals in proximity so I was not able to retrieve the guard or blade.

Not a bad find for a first hunt here. Hopefully many more interesting things to find out there!

The snowy forest was beautiful

Missed you post Ben... already told you had a great find. :icon_thumright: I like this piece a lot. In several years, when you become old and tired you can convert it to a walking stick handle. :laughing7:

A great find, and if there were a banner for detecting in the worst weather, you would deserve it !!!:notworthy:
