After work today I stopped by the 1830's CW property to get a few hours in. The dirt was very dry and a bit tough to dig now.
I was working an area in the back yard around the garage & row of hedges. I noticed that the garbage can that normally sits in back was gone. I decided to detect the bare patch where it sits and I got a strong signal. I thought for sure it would be junk, but was pleasantly surprised with a large button about 4" deep. :icon_thumleft: Also in that same spot was part of a skeleton key.
The button I believe is a General Staff button that measures approx. 28.5mm with a "Scovills Mfg. Co. - Waterbury"
back mark. I suppose this style is post 1902, but the back mark looks to be older, so I am puzzled. :icon_scratch:

Also dug were:
*1926 wheat
*CW bullet -Looks like it has 3 rings, but the base is SOLID. Any ideas what kind of bullet this is?
*Vintage piece of jewelry. Possibly Victorian era. :dontknow:
*Colonial chicken bone. ;D Pretty cool looking old bone actually.

Thanks for looking,
MM

Nice garbage finds MM!! Looks like a Great Seal button with the "sun" above the Eagle and a fired Merrill carbine bullet. When I first began relic hunting, I only found CW bullets for the first trips and was dying to find a CW eagle button. Finally at a US Cavalry Camp, I found a nice Eagle Button-I was very excited. When I got home, I called a friend who was a veteran relic hunter. He asked me if there was a "sun" above the eagle and I said"Yes'. He said it was WW2 maneuvers and I was crushed. Still a great find. HH

Bob,
I was amazed at all the signals today. Normally I detected in the damp/wet soil, and today it was dry as a bone.

I figured it would be post CW. :'( Oh well, I was hoping it was an LC. ;D
Thanks for the CW bullet ID. Here's a picture of a Merrill carbine bullet I found on the internet. This will be my first of that variety. :icon_thumleft:

Merrill Carbines were U.S. Carbines used extensively by Union Soldiers in the CW. They were used by Infantry and Cavalry. That may turn out to be a hot spot with more rain in the fall. Notice the rifling marks on the bullet-COOL!!!

Thanks for that info VOL.
No wonder I dug my infantry button and eagle sword belt plate close by.
I'm waiting to get out into the woods come fall. I dug a lot of rusty pocket knives out there about a year ago,

Nice button! I am pretty sure you are correct about the post 1902 part. It might be from WWI or WWII. I am no history buff on buttons, so don't take my word for granted. Also congratulations on getting in the Western and Eastern Treasure Magazine! :icon_thumleft:
