Hi!
I hope it's allowed to open new tread to new members :))

I need help with this ring..
It's found near my house ( I live near Illyrian fortress, also place with many Roman historical traces).
Detector said it's gold (or silver)

Thank You in advance!

( we have a lot similar things, but some next time)

OK this has been on my mind, I was pretty sure it was Viking, so I checked my books.

These date to 9th C - 11th C as this it's 25g is hard not to believe that its based on the VIKING ORA weight system of a unit of 24.5g. Your weight has 1 dot for 1 unit, too much of a coincidence not to be Viking. I think you need to rethink the history of your area, because it clearly had Viking traders.:icon_thumright:

Reference: cf. polyhedral weights in Hårdh, B. Oriental-Scandinavian Contacts on the Volga in Graham-Campbell, J. and Williams, G. (eds.) Silver Economy in the Viking Age, Walnut Creek, 2007 p.141.

Crusader: Your inputs on these finds and geographic locales are priceless. Great input to the forum. thanx !

Black Sea, up the Danube almost gets you to Bosnia....but those weights could have been traded by others as well...

Its like "Chicken or the egg".
This kind of Polyhedral weights are known also with other names. 2600 BC they were used in Mesopotamia for gambling.
A lot of these are found in Balkans, from Roman period but more from Byzantine empire.

I agree, & mentioned the Byzantine in my initial thoughts, as I remember reading it somewhere. The books are somewhat conflicting on this, however, the fact that the weight is closer to a Viking Unit than a latin/Roman unit to me points in 1 direction.

However, who knows how many hands it got passed through to get there?

Welcome RunLola..Don't be so sure that it is a "little finger" ring. Rings from that period (Roman to Byzantine) and even archaic are smaller because the people were not as large.

You have made some extraordinary finds...nicely done!
