As we all know Summer means fire season ....... and as we all know ..... the west gets hammered . And this year is no exception . These pics are of the Carpenter Canyon Fire which was started by lighting about 5 days ago on the Western slope of the Spring Mountains near Pahrump , Nye County Nevada . It has since crested the mountain and is moving down the Eastern side of the mountain . As of this morning the fire was 15 % contained and had consumed about 15000 acres . There are currently about 900 BLM and Forest Service crews battling the blaze along with 2 helicopters and 2 air tankers with 4 more air tankers due in tomorrow . As I write this post it is 4:38 PDST the temperature is 107° with winds out of the S, SW at 15-20 MPH gusting to 30 with a relative humidly of 11% ....... none of this is good when you are fighting wildfires . There are about 500 homes on the mountain in the Kyle Canyon sub-division . 2 BLM " Hotshot Crews " have been assigned to protect the homes and Clark County Fire & Recuse has sent 5 pumper trucks to aid in what ever way they can . I am by no means an expert on wildfires , but I have seen my share in the last 60 years . I can tell from the smoke that the fire has increased in size and has moved South considerably . Hoss

That equation when concerned with wildfire does not usually have a favorable outcome. Dig a fire (wider and deeper the better) line around your house and set up as many sprinklers on your property as you can. Any sprinklers around your house should be focused on dousing the roof with the residual water flowing down the side of your home and draining into the fire line. I there is any natural water in the vicinity then try to divert it toward your fire line. Best

I thought this would be the year that might get us here in Summit County but so far the fire danger is 'moderate', thanks to the monsoon season starting. I was over in Lake County and Chaffee County yesterday and they had signs up banning all types of outdoor fires except gas stoves. But thank you Lord I had to read those signs through a pouring rain, so maybe the fire danger will lessen for our neighbors south, east, and west of us.

stay safe hoss, I hope the weather changes a little so they can get a handle on the fire. I'm sure the crews will be a little less aggressive after losing those 19 firefighters.

Thank you everyone for your concern ! It is really appreciated ! I have good news to report ............ the Carpenter 1 fire as it is now officially known is 80% contained and people are being allowed to return to their homes . We had thunder storms pass through Southern Nevada on Wednesday and Thursday and this REALLY helped . In the end the numbers are going to be something like this . Over 1300 brave men and women fighting this fire , 85 engines ( fire ) , 10 helicopters , 24 bulldozers , 6 air tankers and countless other support vehicles . The cost , dollars , around $8 million , lives 0 , pets and livestock 0 , 6 ranch buildings , 50 square miles of the Toiyabe National Forest . A HUGE THANK YOU ! to all the firefighters ! and to the good citizens of Clark and Nye Counties who brought cookies , candy , fruit and other items for the firefighters . And a special thank you to the Cannery Hotels & Casinos for providing free rooms to those who were displaced by the fire . Thanks again everyone ! Hoss
