As everyone must know by now, I'm moving from NYC to Port Allegheny, PA. I bought a house that was built in 1900. It is built on an 8.68 acre parcel. So far, half the move is complete. I met a few of my neighbors and they appear to be some incredible people.
The 2 families to my immediate left are related. Mom and Dad, (Ralph), in one house, Daughter, (Laura), and Son in law, (Jeff), in the other. Now although they are all wonderful people, the Individual I want to get close to most, is the Patriarch. He is in his 80's and has so much information on the surrounding area. He was born and raised here.
Yesterday, after a day of unpacking and putting stuff away, I decided to visit Ralph. It turns out he had a metal detector that he purchased from Radio Shack. He thinks he left it in North Carolina, while on vacation many years ago. He told me that although he hit his property, no one was permitted to metal detect on my property. Well that was all I needed to hear.
I excused myself and told Ralph I was going to hit my yard and return to show him my finds.
I was hoping to find the "Clothes Line" area, (That I hoped contained some silver coins), but it was not meant to be. I recovered some bullets, a shell casing, a few pieces of iron, some bottle caps, some aluminum siding scraps, and what appears to be a medallion of some kind. There are no hallmarks but I think it is too heavy to be white gold or silver. Maybe lead??
I took my treasures back to Ralph, who was sitting in the shade in his daughter's backyard. He was delighted at looking at my finds and immediately tried to ID the shell casing.
Then he started to tell me a few stories. One in particular was about a guy who had a few drinks in the local tavern back in the 60's. When this fellow got outside the tavern and into the gravel parking lot, he decided to empty his pockets and toss a fist full of coins across the parking lot. Now I don't know if that lot has been paved over but those are the stories I like to hear.
Yep, I think I'm going to try to get close to my new best friend Ralph.
