I think you're talking about Knotts Berry Farm in Buena Park. It's a theme park with a lot of history behind it. When you go definitely check out Mrs. Knott's Chicken Dinner Restaurant (Just outside the theme park in the Marketplace, be ready for a long wait to get in, though.) As for the mine I think you're referring to the Calico Mine ride, near the center of the park.

The Knott family also used to own the Calico Ghost town just outside of Barstow, CA. Nice little tourist trap.

I have been to the Calico Ghost town just outside of Barstow. It was a working mine and now is a fun little road side tourist stop, and it does have a little history hiding there in the folks that operate it if you get them to talk with you. I enjoyed my Candied apple and the gun fight in the town square. There is a mine tour also. It was better than The Largest ball of sisal twine built by a single person in Darwin, Minnesota (they didn't even have candied apples).
