Interesting last few days here.
Thank you to everyone who shared artifacts and info.
I figure I'll add some a bit out of the ordinary artifacts to kinda keep the theme. ..feel free to post your shell artifacts.

Old school. He had many things published and bought many things that were published. Lot of the gorgets came off a creek in Chattanooga years ago. He was my mentor and was interested in what ever we were finding. Made me read books. I may have shared the shell with you in and e-mail.

All of the Shell that I find are Beads or Pendants.

These pieces were gifted to me and are all from Venezuela.

Wow that's some cool stuff right there.
What a gift.
I can't help but look at the small holed gorgets as buttons.. or some sort of closure.
Thanks for sharing these.

NICE! about time you posted.. just kidding.. thanks for chipping in!
Some nice ones..heartbreaking gorget there.
Funny you posted the clam shell..I was just checking out a few of mine that seem to have been used as digging tools...or Mabey for putting an edge on other shell tools.

Gotcha.. what's your take on these?
Do you think they were in socketed handles?
I know mine appears to have been used as a hammer.

that piece I have is pecked and smoothed in the middle for hafting, possibly to pop those holes in the bigger shells to cut the toes on the meat, the diameter actually fits a lot of the bigger conchs we found on the midden, I found another piece that is the center whorl but flattened on one side....here are some pictures of the 2 different pieces....this was an older midden possible archaic bigger shell hammers, different styles

Looks like your holding my stuff..LOL. thanks.. I have one flattened smooth on one side also.
My buddy found a double grooved shell plummet on the same site that was flat on the back.
We were thinking Mabey small atlatl weight on that one.

I don't have a lot of shell artifacts but here are the few that I do have. Diggindad & I found these years ago in Dale County Alabama while canoeing down the creek. A few had fallen out from a eroded root system under a tree and we found that if you shook the roots, more would fall out. Collected up all we could. It was a good day!

Nice artifacts.. cool way of finding them too.
I found a mano and matate that go together just like that.

Post them when you have a chance, I liked to see. I've never been able to find them together and have had to put one with the other to make a set.

It's made of local material and not the classic mortar and pestle look but this is a common mano and matate from campsites in my area.
The village sites have more refined examples.
These were touching eachother in a root ball of a palm tree on one of the sites that now have condominiums on them.

Gator,
That's a nice find! I've got a few but none that nice and tops and bottoms of mine were not found together. Had to piece together what I have to make "whole ones".
