This is from my childhood, so the details are a little fuzzy. Upstate New York, Finger Lakes region, Seneca Lake. From Geneva head down the east side of the lake. We had family friends named Lont that had a house on the lake (8 miles down?) (may be able to pin down the location using 1960's land records). Walking south along the beach, maybe 1/4 mile from the Lont house I came on an outcrop of black shale or slate the came right down to the water. In the rock and lying on the beach were fossilized clams? They were 1=2" more round than oval, same color as the surrounding rock, and would easily separate from the rock. Completely 3 dimensional, nothing adhering to them. Perfectly formed shells, but now solid black rock.
