It looks like a hunk of coral, perhaps a brain coral. It appears to have been a living colony of coral polyps sometime in the past. Hope this helps a little.
Nice piece to add into a collection.
Keep on the hunt.

You were correct. It is a crinoid calyx. It is missing the arms but, still a nice piece. There are likely more where it came from.
